Just a quick update tonight.  Sorry for the brevity, but lots of things were covered up before I could photograph them!  Aargh!

We've put a little nicer frame for the tarp, so now we can work on the boat in any weather.  Aahh.  Nice.

Last Friday we canvassed the hull, so it looks strangely blank.

There's lots of sanding dust all over everything because after canvassing, we got back to the last stages of fairing the hull before painting.

White dust everywhere.

The bow fitting has been fashioned and installed.

No more worries about that knife edge bow.  This piece looks pretty slick.

And lastly, since the ballast keel has been bolted on, it's time to fair the small section of deadwood between the ballast and keel.

We used a combination of power planers (for the bulk of stock removal) and hand planes.

Next up:  we're working out a system for attaching the rudder.

Sorry this is so short... more after Thursday.

Re: Quick update

Tom:

In fairing the deadwood, did you encounter any concave surfaces? How did you handle this? I guess the power plane is out. Also, did you use templates to get the final shape right or just eyeball it?

Re: Quick update

They do make a power planer version of a compass plane, but it's pricy. The nicest one is made by Virutex virutex.com/motorizedcurveplaner.aspx, but Makita makes one as well www.timberwolftools.com/tools/makita/M-1002BA.html

We didn't use either. You can use a hand compass plane, carving tools, a grinder, a slick with a curved blade... there are a lot of options. We would normally use templates to get close, but the final product needs to be faired in using battens. We use chalked battens in all orientations and then worked the high spots. You can go back to the patterns to make sure that you're not creating an excessive hollow, but the battens and hand tools are really what's going to create that sweet, fair curve.
