New Exhibits in 2009
The Museum of Yachting will hold three new exhibits during the 2009 season. The overlapping exhibits will span the one hundred year period between 1883 when Rufus Bush first made plans to build the schooner yacht Coronet to 1983 when the America’s Cup left Newport.
The first exhibit, Imagination in Scale: The Practical Art of Ship and Yacht Models will present the many different types of ship and yacht models and their uses. For centuries, ship models have captured the imagination of people young and old. The sight of a three-dimensional scaled down ship or yacht instantly conjures voyages to faraway lands, adventures on threatening seas and a temporary escape from the ordinary. In addition to these magical transformative qualities, models serve other, more practical uses.
The Museum also hosts a new exhibit on the historic schooner Coronet that will coincide with the much anticipated restoration of the yacht. Since her launching on August 17, 1885, the schooner Coronet has always intrigued people through her majesty, her mystery and her physical presence. She is a remarkable vessel for a number of reasons - most notable, is that she exists at all.
Also on view at the museum is an exhibit on the America's Cup: the Newport Years from 1930–1983, when Cup syndicates competed in majestic J/Class and 12-Metre yachts.
